Two people are dead and multiple others were injured in a massive pile-up on Interstate 55 in St. John Parish, Louisiana, on October 23, 2023. The pile-up involved dozens of vehicles and was caused by low visibility due to dense fog.
According to Louisiana State Police, the pile-up began around 7:00 AM on I-55 northbound near mile marker 20. The fog was so thick that drivers could not see more than a few feet ahead of them. As a result, multiple vehicles collided, causing a chain reaction that stretched for over a mile.
Crisis responders from numerous offices raced to the scene to help the harmed and clear the destruction. The highway was shut down in the two headings for a few hours while teams attempted to tidy up the scene.
The two individuals who were killed in the stack up have not at this point been distinguished. State police say that different others were additionally harmed, yet the degree of their wounds is obscure.
The pile-up on I-55 is a reminder of the dangers of driving in low-visibility conditions. Drivers are urged to slow down and use their headlights when driving in fog or other low-visibility conditions.
